TikTok evidence capture tools: how to save TikTok videos for court

Reviewed 2026-11-01
Short answer

To preserve a whole public TikTok account, Social Media Evidence is our specialist pick: it downloads every video in original quality, hashes each file with SHA-256, records server timestamps in UTC and transcribes the speech, from $19 per account. For single TikTok videos alongside other platforms, WebPreserver, Page Vault and Forensic OSINT all list TikTok.

TikTok evidence is mostly spoken. The caption may say little; the threat, admission or claim is in what someone says on camera, in the comments under the video, or in a pattern across dozens of posts. That makes TikTok harder to preserve than a text post, and a screenshot of a paused video rarely shows enough.

Where TikTok evidence comes up

In most of these, the volume is the problem. One account can hold hundreds of videos, and the relevant ones are rarely labeled.

Social Media Evidence: built for whole TikTok accounts

Social Media Evidence is a cloud service that archives every video on a public TikTok account once you add it by username. You do not need a TikTok account of your own. Each video is downloaded in original quality, hashed with SHA-256 and transcribed with OpenAI's Whisper into time-coded text. Posted and captured times are recorded by its servers in UTC, not typed in by you. Forensic AI Search then lets you ask plain-English questions, such as which videos mention a named person, and answers with citations to the posts.

Comments are captured with nested replies, usernames and timestamps, up to 200 per TikTok post. Archives can be re-run later to pick up new videos, and only the new content is downloaded. The limits: public accounts only, and exports are CSV and JSON rather than a PDF report. Pricing is a one-time payment per account, from $19 with 30-day access.

Browser tools for single videos

If you need one or two TikTok videos plus posts on Facebook or X, a browser tool is often simpler. WebPreserver expands comment threads automatically and saves video as MP4 with SHA-256 hashes, digital signatures and authenticated timestamps. Forensic OSINT downloads video with a signed continuity report that includes the SHA-256 hash of the delivered file, and its free plan allows 3 video downloads a year. Page Vault captures TikTok pages and video through its browser software or its On Demand team.

On integrity, all four record SHA-256 hashes for video. The differences are elsewhere: WebPreserver adds digital signatures, Forensic OSINT adds a signed continuity report, Page Vault offers affidavits, and Social Media Evidence adds server-recorded UTC timestamps, transcripts and whole-account search.

How to save TikTok videos for court, step by step

  1. Act quickly. Videos can be deleted or an account made private at any time. If you have nothing else to hand, screen-record the video with the address bar visible, then follow up with a proper capture.
  2. Record the account. Note the handle and profile URL. Handles can change, so capture the profile page as well as the videos.
  3. Capture with a hashing tool. Use a tool that saves the original file and records a SHA-256 hash and a server timestamp.
  4. Keep the original untouched. Work from copies. Hashing the original again later should give the same value.
  5. Write down who captured it and how. Under US Federal Rule of Evidence 901, someone may need to explain that the item is what you claim it is. Other countries have similar requirements.
  6. Think about what the platform holds. For content you cannot see publicly, or account records, a lawyer may need a subpoena or court order, and police use legal process to the platform.

The free route and its limits

TikTok's Download your data tool gives you a copy of your own account data, which may include your username, watch history and comment history. TikTok says the file may take a few days to prepare, stays available for up to 4 days, and may leave out some data, such as data that affects the privacy of others. It does not give you anyone else's videos.

Screen recordings are free and quick, but they carry no hash or server timestamp, and the person who made the recording will usually need to explain it. Treat them as an emergency step, not a substitute for a capture.

Transcripts: useful, but check them

A TikTok account with 300 videos can hold many hours of speech. Machine transcripts let you search that content in minutes rather than days, which is often where the cost of a matter lies. Treat a transcript as a finding aid: quote from it only after checking the words against the video, and rely on the original file and its hash as the record.

Questions and answers

Q.Do I need my own TikTok account to capture TikTok evidence?

A.Not with every tool. Social Media Evidence archives public accounts added by username, and you sign in with a Google account. Browser tools such as WebPreserver and Forensic OSINT capture what your browser shows, so the result depends on what you can see.

Q.Can I capture a private TikTok account?

A.Not with public capture tools; Social Media Evidence states it cannot archive private accounts. Content in a private account usually needs the account holder's cooperation, a court order or, for police, legal process to the platform. Lawyers should check their professional conduct rules before seeking access.

Q.Is a TikTok transcript evidence?

A.A transcript helps you find and quote what was said, but the video file is the primary record. Keep the original file and its hash, and check any quote against the audio before you rely on it.

Q.How many TikTok comments are captured?

A.Social Media Evidence captures up to 200 comments per TikTok post, with nested replies, usernames and timestamps. WebPreserver and Forensic OSINT expand comment threads on the page as they capture it.
